WOODBURY — Nonnewaug High School made the decision back in October to make Wednesday into a full day of school online, and now Wednesday’s schedule is changing yet again.

Beginning Dec. 16, Wednesdays will consist of all seven classes throughout the day with 23-minute periods, beginning at 8:30 and ending at 11:43 a.m. The day also includes lunch (11:45-12:15 p.m.) and a flex period (12:15-1:35) at the end of school day.

This is the third different schedule for Wednesday online school that Nonnewaug has used since the beginning of the year. At the start of the year, which was under the hybrid model, Wednesday was used for office hours and one-on-one meetings with teachers. Later in the fall, Nonnewaug moved to mandatory 30-minute periods with a flex period and lunch 8:35 a.m. to 1:35 p.m.

At the start of the year, Wednesdays were beneficial for students, with many students using the day for independently working or catching up on work.

“I feel a little upset that we have a full day of school now on Wednesdays,” said freshman Brady Cordova. “From my perspective, we were doing a good job using Wednesdays for catching up on work and meeting with teachers.”

Another thing that the students used and liked about the Wednesdays before was that they could get in touch and meet with the teachers one-on-one. This was a day that students used to get organized and make sure that they were caught up with everything. They were also able to get a break from the different and new online learning techniques for school due to the widely spreading COVID-19 pandemic.

Brady’s mom, Wendi Cordova, disagreed with her son.

“I like the fact that it’s a lot more organized than it was before the change because now there’s a scheduled time to meet with all of the teachers,” said Wendi Cordova. “The work for the students before was just a freelance, but now bringing back school on Wednesdays, work will be much more organized.”

Brady had also shared how the Wednesdays before the change were effective for him.

“Before the change I was meeting with a teacher every Wednesday to go over work and I found it very helpful,” Brady said. “But now with this change, I can’t find time to meet with the teacher privately due to the fact that it’s a full day of school.”

Region 14 will remain in fully remote learning until Jan. 19, 2021. The district will then revisit the decision and see if it is safe enough for students to go back to in-person school and the hybrid model. But for now, students will continue to work online with live classes all five days of the week.
