There’s a reason Nonnewaug sports bring pride to

There’s a reason Nonnewaug sports bring pride to the Tribe: When other schools come to “the home of the Chiefs,” acres of championship banners and screaming student sections greet them.

On Sept. 19, all teams except cross country and golf will face rivals on Nonnewaug’s home turf. These annual homecoming game days showcase a core value of Nonnewaug High School: fan culture.

“I think from what I’ve seen so far, it’s just the backbone of the school,” Nonnewaug athletic director Andrew Tammero said. “We have a lot of quality teams, a lot of great individual athletes, and we’re always going for league championships. Our sports program just brings everyone together; we have lots of students and athletes who show their love and support for their team as well as other teams.”

The Nonnewaug girls soccer team claimed a 4-3 win

The Nonnewaug girls soccer team claimed a 4-3 win against Terryville on Sept. 4, starting the season off on a great note.

Senior captain Katie Farrell is happy with the way the girls played the game even after a rocky start.

“Obviously being down within 30 seconds of the game starting was super upsetting,” said Farrell, “but as soon as they scored, our team immediately locked in and got serious, which I’m really proud of. I’m super happy with everyone who played from Ellie [McDonald] man-marking their top player to Hailey [Goldman] making some plays. I think it’s gonna stay as a highlight for our entire season.”

Coach Adam Brutting, the first-year head coach, was a little nervous at the start but had faith in his team.

“The opposing team scored 27 seconds into the game, so that was nerve-racking, and I thought in my head, ‘Oh, let’s see who we are,’” says Brutting. “Some teams could put their heads down and be down on themselves and let that be a snowball effect and have the other team dominate them, but we did not do that. We stood up to the challenge and battled them back.”

The first half was back and forth with ties at 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3.

Goldman, a junior, scored two of the four goals and had one assist.

“Going into the game, I was very mentally and physically prepared because I didn’t wanna walk off losing to Terryville on my own home turf again like the year prior,” Goldman said. “Even though when we went out, they ended up scoring in the first 40 seconds of the game, but we took that as a sign not to just give up and just let them have it. It was a sign that fine we let that happen but it won’t happen that easy again.”

Brutting looks forward to the rest of the season and hopes for his team to succeed while having a good time.

“I want the girls to work hard and learn some new things about soccer, win some games, be successful and have fun,” Brutting said. “If we do those things, I think we can consider the season a success and we will be able to look back on it and feel really good about the whole thing and be really proud about all the work we did.”

The art show at Nonnewaug is an opportunity for st

The art show at Nonnewaug is an opportunity for students to showcase their portfolios and skills learned throughout the school year. This year’s concept was “Where We Shine,” which ran in the gym from June 5-7.

Leeza Desjardins, an art teacher at Nonnewaug, says that planning the setup for the show was easy due to good weather, meaning the gym was open for them to work.

“It’s not hard planning around gym classes because our [physical education] teachers are very accommodating; they let us in their classroom, and because the weather’s nice, they’re able to go outside,” Desjardins said. “If the weather is not conducive, they have a beautiful facility downstairs that was added with the renovation [the fitness room], which they are happy with using instead.”

Desjardins says the seniors come up with the concept in advance to the show, and they choose based on how their year went.

“The concept of the show was picked by the seniors,” Desjardins said. “They sit down and chat about their year, about what defines their year/four years they’ve experienced here at Nonnewaug, and they talk about what’s realistic and what they can’t do. They come up with the consensus, majority rules; some people might not be as happy, but they are on board afterwards. We go with the consensus and see where that goes from there.”

Desjardins says that senior artists are able to sell their art, a nice plus and some extra motivation to get their art ready before the show.

“Some students can sell their prints of art, and some sell the original piece, which goes for more money,” Desjardins said. “Only seniors can sell; the underclassmen will need their pieces for future portfolios if they’re going into art school. You can go right up to the artist and ask about it. They have their business cards, and a lot of them do art through commissions.”

As spring sports have come to an end, seniors have

As spring sports have come to an end, seniors have played their sport for the final time at Nonnewaug.

Some seniors are sad about everything coming to an end after all they put into their sports, while others have mixed emotions. Although an end can be upsetting, they are ready for new beginnings.

Maggie Keane, a senior volleyball and tennis player, is sad that her high school journey is coming to an end.

“It hits hard,” Keane says. “I love playing high school sports. I feel like it’s a lot less stressful and it’s more like having fun. You bond with your teammates, and you don’t really have that much schoolwork either, so it is easy balancing it all.

Although Kaylee Jackson’s senior season in volleyball ended in the fall, it was still the last time she will play a high school sport.

“It feels horrible,” Jackson says. ”I started playing in middle school when I was around 12. I played all year round, so it was all I did. I spent a lot of time, physical and mental energy during the time, along with a lot of money, just for it to end.”
