SOUTHBURY – Monday night, April 5th, at approximately 10:30 p.m., two juniors from Pomperaug High School were involved in a serious car accident that killed one teenager and left another in serious condition.

Pomperaug High School, part of the Region 15 School District,  serves the neighboring towns of Southbury and Middlebury.

The driver, Ryan Rutledge, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ryan held the title for an overall amazing person and an amazing friend. He actively participated in his community, playing lacrosse, football, and golf for the Pomperaug Panthers. He was a part of the ski team at his school and went to the gym everyday. On top of his busy athletic schedule, he also played three instruments. He is loved by many and will be deeply missed.

The passenger, Eva Houlihan, was rushed to the hospital and is still in serious condition. Eva is a star in the world of running for the Panthers; she has participated in cross country and track since 6th grade. Eva is a team player and puts others before herself, showing nothing but love for those around her. She loves to hang out with her friends and family in her free time.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist with Eva’s medical bills and recovery. As of Thursday afternoon, the community raised $53,272 and the donation total continues to increase. More donations can be made at https://gofund.me/32436daf
