WOODBURY — The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The gala, hosted by Vogue, took place May 2. Every year, Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, invites celebrities to dress up and showcase their best looks. While some stars hit the carpet in over the top gowns, some celebrities opt for a much simpler look.

This year’s theme for the Met was “Gilded Glamour,” drawing inspiration from the Gilded Age. This is a reference to the late 19th century, a time when people would display their wealth through their clothing. Designers from all over the world had a chance to play around with different decades in the past, and explore famous outfits to replicate.

“Met Gala 2022 was a continuation of last year’s gala which took place in September. The theme was ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion,’” said Ava Witte, a Nonnewaug junior. “It is supposed to reflect the evolution of American designers. One of the main intentions was to highlight the talents of these overlooked individuals. The dress code was white tie affair/’Gilded Glamour’ so guests were expected to dress in fashion reminiscent of the Gilded Age.”

Best Dressed

The extremely famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” gown worn by Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe, was worn by Kim Kardashian on the Met Gala carpet. The white ivory cocktail dress, designed by Jean Louis is valued over $10 million. Although the dress was labeled as a scandal when Monroe wore it in 1962, Kardashian helped reclaim the beauty of this infamous gown.

Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively made an unforgettable appearance at the Met Gala. Lively decided to honor New York City, as her look paid homage to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the constellation murals at Grand Central Station. Lively hit the carpet in a copper-colored, embellished gown which transformed into a second blue gown. This ensemble was designed by Versace, and Lively paired both looks with matching metallic gloves. No one does Met Gala fashion like Blake Lively.

“One of my favorite looks from the Met Gala was definitely Taylor Hill,” said Emily Crawford, a junior. “Her outfit was gorgeous and on theme. The color of the dress and flower details on the back of her dress were beautiful.”

Worst Dressed

Popular actor Sebastian Stan walked the iconic Met Gala steps in a hot pink suit by Valentino, showcasing an 80’s look rather than Gilded Glamour. Stan finished his outfit with hot pink sneakers. It’s safe to say that not every star understood the theme.

It hurts me to have to say this, but Gigi Hadid disappointed at the Met Gala. Hadid is usually known for her amazing outfits, always on theme. However this year, Hadid arrived at the Met carpet wearing a bold maroon latex jumpsuit by Versace, pairing it with a showstopping coat. Although Hadid’s outfit was one of a kind, it was not appropriate for the theme.
