SOUTHINGTON – The 2021-22 Berkshire League Banquet belonged to Nonnewaug. The Chiefs cleaned up at the ceremony June 2 at the Aqua Turf, receiving the Ted Alex Award, the league’s top honor that recognizes athletic success and sportsmanship.

“It was an honor and a surprise to accept the prestigious Ted Alex Award at the Berkshire League Banquet,” said Nonnewaug athletic director Declan Curtin, who accepted the award. “The awards encompass all the hard work put forth by our coaches, athletes, and their parents.”

The award is given to a school that exemplifies great sportsmanship as well as great athleticism and leadership. Final league standings in each sport make up 75% of the award’s weight, while standings in each sport’s Ted Alex Award voting comprise 25% of the weight.

“It is an award that recognizes athletic achievements combined with sportsmanship,” Curtin said. “It’s important to win, but you must win the right way. Seven league championships in one year combined with the sportsmanship aspect is something for our entire school to be proud of.”

The Chiefs clinched seven BL titles and two sportsmanship awards in 2021-22 school year, but those weren’t all the awards — not only did Nonnewaug take home the Ted Alex Award, but Chiefs racked up many individual All-Berkshire League first team awards.
