WOODBURY — October is here, meaning pinked-out athletes and spirited bleachers are common at Nonnewaug.
Many of Nonnewaug’s teams throughout the month have show their support for breast cancer awareness month. They do this by wearing any form of pink, from socks to shirts and pink eye black to bandanas.
The ideas of showing support are endless, and a few of Nonnewaug’s clubs have taken it upon themselves to bring them to life.
Nonnewaug’s Athletes’ Council and Student Events Planning Committee worked to make the pink-outs successful, including a fundraising bake sale and accessories sale. The preparation that goes into this is beyond what the eye can see, and Athletes’ Council president Juliette Nichols is familiar with the hard work that goes into it.
“My job as president is to make sure there will be people at the [bake sale] table at all times,” Nichols said. “We want everyone to participate as much as they can with wearing pink to the fullest so we have to supply things that students can buy to wear and also support the cause at the same time.”
Nonnewaug’s support of this cause has grown immensely since past years, according to senior soccer player Skylar Chung.
“Freshman and sophomore year we wore pink socks to show support for the cause, but that was about it,” Chung said. “Last year, the pink-out homecoming game was really big, along with the participation in the bake sale for Cancer Couch.”
Not only do the clubs of Nonnewaug support this cause, but sports teams as well.
“Nonnewaug sports teams help run a bake sale table during the homecoming game,” said senior Sam Duncan, one of the captains of the girls soccer team. “They raise awareness by wearing pink socks and pink ribbons in our hair.”
It may just seem like a color to the eye, but there is far more importance of showing support to this cause then many know. It is not only important to athletes but to fans that attend many of the sporting events here at Nonnewaug.
“My mom, aunts, and grandfather all had breast cancer, so this cause is important to me,” Duncan continues. “There was also an [alumna] from the soccer team who recently had breast cancer, so this cause is important to Nonnewaug soccer.”
Athletes’ Council always finds ways to better continue their support for the cause each year.
“The only thing that I would improve is to have the cross country teams also somehow be on site with us,” Nichols said. “It’s unfortunate that they are away when everyone else is home, so maybe that change can happen next year.”
