WOODBURY – Halloween night: When the decorations are out, the doors are open, and the kids are walking around in the dark with their bags full of candy.
Even as high schoolers, though, teenagers have to stay safe within the darkness. Little kids should stay close to their parents and high schoolers can’t be out all night.
This time of the year it gets dark earlier, and especially with Halloween being a Tuesday and also a school night, young people should take some safety precautions while outside collecting candy.
Nonnewaug School Resource Officer Christopher O’Toole said one of the most important precautions that everyone should be taking on Halloween involves vehicles.
“You should be very careful about traffic,” said O’Toole. “Stay off the roads; cars are all over the place.”
In addition, O’Toole said everyone should be cautious about where they are going, whose house they are going to, and that the candy is safe to be eaten.
“Go to houses that you know,” said O’Toole. “If you have open candy or people that make their own candy, I wouldn’t eat any of that [or] anything that looks suspicious.”
O’Toole also urges trick-or-treaters to approach strangers with caution.
“I’d recommend going with a group of people, and if a car pulls up near you, stay away from the car,” O’Toole said. “Stay away from cars in general.”
