Students Throw Cold Water on Some of NHS’ Fountains

Freshman Morgan Willis fills up a water bottle from the bottle filler near the gym Oct. 20. This is one of the more preferred water fountains by students.

WOODBURY — The term “school water” is coined by Nonnewaug students to describe the water that comes from school fountains and bottle fillers with a negative connotation. However, some students claim that this term’s reputation depends on which fountain you go to.

“The water fountain by the gym is a lot colder,” said sophomore Madelyn Murphy.

Some even claim the water from the hose near the athletic field facilities is the highest quality at Nonnewaug.

“I only use the hose water by the fields,” said freshman Indigo Kimball.

“The best water in the whole school is the hose water out back,” agreed sophomore Grace Rubacha.

There are some fountains and bottle fillers, however, that students go out of their way to avoid using.

“The ag water fountains are terrible,” claims sophomore Mia Layseca.

In addition to taste and temperature, function is also a key factor in preferences.

“The one in the girls locker room doesn’t work very well,” says sophomore Marcella Vetro. “The one by the gym isn’t very good either.”

School custodian Clayton Hilpertshauser gave no indication to whether these claims about differences between the fountains can be confirmed, however he does confirm the safety and quality standards of them all.

“Our water is tested quarterly by a local company,” Hilpertshauser said. “Water is tested twice a year by the state of Connecticut and the water filters in every water fountain are changed quarterly.”
