“Veterans know better than anyone else the price of freedom, for they’ve suffered the scars of war. We can offer them no better tribute than to protect what they have won for us.” — President Ronald Reagan in a 1983 address to the nation

WOODBURY — Nonnewaug High School takes pleasure in appreciating the veterans in our community. The annual Veterans Day ceremony, put together by the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, takes the time to honor those who have served in the armed forces. Many of the students involved share appreciation for the event.

“It’s cool to be involved,” says Sam Duncan, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society president. “Not only do I get to help honor the veterans, but I also learn more about Veterans Day as a whole.”

Contributing to such an impactful ceremony is considered an honor by the students involved, and many rave about the accolade it is to participate.

“It means a lot to me,” says Maggie Keane, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society treasurer. “I get to promote the event on our social media page. It overall shows my passion for history and those who sacrificed for our country.”

Rho Kappa students are involved in the ceremony in more ways than one, whether they are giving a speech or helping out behind the scenes. These students also believe that the ceremony is good for the school climate.

“Our recognizing of veterans brings a positive attitude to our school atmosphere,” said Keane. “Students with members of their family who contributed to our country are being well recognized and appreciated, which is always good. Our principal [Mykal Kuslis] is still serving in the military too, so it’s also a positive promotion to the service.”

About 30 local veterans, including social studies teacher Scott Parkhouse and relatives of current Nonnewaug students, attended the Nov. 8 ceremony in the auditorium.

“The events positively affect our school climate,” said Duncan. “Everyone recognizes the sacrifice that Veterans face, and everyone’s in a better mood after the event.”
