The Chief Advocate’s editorial staff has selected Nonnewaug basketball junior forward Matt Shupenis and Nonnewaug basketball senior guard Juliette Nichols as the school’s January Athletes of the Month.
Shupenis’ play in the post has helped the Chiefs ascend to the top of the Berkshire League standings with a chance to secure a league championship for the first time since 2016. He’s led Nonnewaug to a 10-1 record in its last 11 games, including a 17-point effort in a Jan. 5 win at Shepaug and a 23-point game Jan. 10 at Terryville.
Nichols, the captain of the girls team, enjoyed a streak of five straight games averaging 25 points per game during January as Nonnewaug went on an 8-3 run during an 11-game stretch from January to early February.
