NHS’ Suess Raises Funds for Police K-9s, Hosts Meet and Greet (PHOTOS)

WOODBURY — Nonnewaug students have been known for their community involvement. NHS senior Jason Suess is no exception as he has worked this spring to raise funds for a protective jacket to be worn by a Connecticut police dog.

Suess ran a penny wars fundraiser earlier in the spring. Each morning, students and staff saw Suess sitting at a desk with colorful buckets of cash coordinated to each grade. The penny wars raised money for organizations that specifically provide vests for K-9s serving with police departments around the state. Classes were invited to attend a meet and greet with K-9s in May where students and staff met the kind of dogs which the vests are going to.

Gary McVety is a senior at Nonnewaug High School and a first-year writer for the Chief Advocate. He is originally from West Haven and moved to Woodbury four years ago, beginning his high school career in a new town with a new school. Outside of school, he focuses his time around his job, where he works in the meat and seafood department at LaBonne’s in Woodbury. He has enjoyed writing since he can remember and enjoys exploring different opportunities and different writing styles, which led him to take journalism this year.
