The Met Gala, often referred to as “the Oscars of the East Coast,” once again dazzled onlookers with its blend of high fashion and celebrity spectacle. Hosted annually by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City, the event serves as a fundraiser for the museum’s exhibitions while also setting the stage for some of the most extravagant and original fashion moments of the year.
This year’s theme, “Surrealism,” invited attendees to delve into the realm of the fantastical and the dreamlike, drawing inspiration from the arts inspired by the subconscious mind. From swirling patterns to optical illusions, the red carpet became a canvas for artistic expression, as celebrities and designers alike embraced the opportunity to push the boundaries of fashion.
“I’ve always wondered what goes on behind the scenes when they pick their outfits,” says Nonnewaug senior Jillian Brown. “There’s so much detail that goes into it but sometimes it’s hard to tell what the backstory is and why they really chose that outfit.”
As guests ascended the iconic steps, they were greeted by an atmosphere of creativity and extravagance, where every outfit told a story and every detail was meticulously curated. From elaborate headpieces to intricate accessories, no detail was spared in bringing the surrealism to life.
“The Met Gala is definitely one of the most diverse and prestigious events,” said Nonnewaug senior Zosia Olejniczak. “I really wish they showed us more of the atmosphere after guests walk the carpet.”
Among the standout ensembles was reality TV star Kim Kardashian, whose gown seemed to shimmer with otherworldly grace, capturing the essence of surrealism. Meanwhile, singer Bad Bunny made a bold statement with a suit adorned with stripes, a bouquet of flowers and a large beret.
“The Met Gala’s different themes every year are a huge reason the event is so important,” said Nonnewaug sophomore Arin Morales. “I remember last year someone just wore a cat costume in honor of Karl Lagerfield, the attendees really go all out.”
One of the enduring traditions of the Met Gala is the presence of co-chairs who help shape the event’s theme and guest list. This year, the co-chairs included influential figures from the worlds of fashion, entertainment, and art, each bringing their own unique perspective to the proceedings.
Beyond the fashion spectacle, the Met Gala holds a deeper significance within the worlds of art and culture. By bringing together luminaries from various industries, the event serves as a platform for collaboration and conversation, fostering connections that extend far beyond the red carpet. As the night went on , surrealism became the main focus, showing us how art can change us, make us think, and also make us question ourselves.
