TORRINGTON – The Nonnewaug track and field team took on the Torrington Varsity Alumni Club Invitational; it was their last invitational meet of the season.
“It’s a smaller meet than most invitationals but the competition is still there,” said Ethan Perez, a senior captain on the team. “This is where you PR [personal record], and get better times [rather] than worrying about winning the meet, especially when we have league meets coming up.”
Despite the focus on individual improvement, the girls’ team came out as the overall winners of the meet. There were also many individual titles on both the boys’ and girls’ side.
“It was nice to win an invitational meet,” said junior captain Ellie McDonald. “We don’t get too many chances to win these types of meets due to the size of our team and the competition we face from larger schools in bigger and better classes than us, so it was really exciting and rewarding when we won.”
The Chiefs’ season ended with an 8-0 record for both teams, the undefeated season being secured in their home meet against Thomaston High and Terryville High on May 13. Their next meet is the Berkshire League Championships on May 18 at Plumb Hill in Litchfield.
