WOODBURY — Nonnewaug boys soccer kept its winning streak going as they claimed another 1-0 win against Northwestern on Sept. 13.
Freshman Vincenzo Rose scored on an assist by senior captain Lincoln Nichols with less than 10 minutes remaining to give the Chiefs (3-0-1) their third win in four matches. Coach Toby Denman was proud of the boys for coming through with a win.
“We played pretty well,” said Denman. “Lakeview [on Sept. 10] and Northwestern are pretty talented and they have a couple guys who can score. We really put a premium on defending first and that we did pretty well. I think they might have outshot us by a shot or two, but only a couple were really dangerous.”
Liam Sandor, a senior captain, was happy with the outcome of the game, especially because it wasn’t easy.
“The game was a battle,” said Sandor. “We came in expecting it to be a close game. We were down a few kids, but we got the job done. It’s a great team effort and some big plays individually from Lincoln, Vinny, Matt [Shupenis], Gavin [Sandor] and a number of other players. While we played well, there’s always room for improvement.”
Jeffrey Bernardi, another senior captain, is ready and prepared for the rest of the season along with his teammates.
“I feel that the game went great,” said Bernardi. “There were some ups and downs, but the team held together and was able to pull off the win and then hold them off for the last couple minutes. I think the rest of the year will be a battle, but the team is ready to fight for every win we get.”
Denman hopes his boys take opportunities and come out with a few more wins.
“If we continue to focus on defending first, it’s going to also help us generate more scoring opportunities,” said Denman. “I think the BL [teams] are proving themselves to be pretty tight this year — even Terryville and Lakeview were both winless in the league but they are competitive — and so I think it’s gonna be a kind of anyone’s game.”
Sandor has many goals in mind for the team. He hopes for the team to show improvement while having fun.
“We have a lot of goals to meet,” said Sandor. “Firstly, I think staying hungry and competitive is huge, just taking it game by game. Another is definitely making it to the Berkshire League tournament final because it’s something our program hasn’t achieved yet. Finally, as a senior and captain, it’s our duty to foster the next generation of athletes through improving their skills, building bonds and creating reasonable human beings, as Coach Denman would say.”
