WOODBURY – With this year’s PSAT and SAT days looming, students are beginning to feel the pressure of some of the most significant standardized tests they’ll take as Nonnewaug students.
“When SAT’s are around the corner, many students feel the pressure of getting a good score for colleges to see and along with that, they tend not to know how to prepare,” said Raymond Lomax, a senior at Nonnewaug. “However, with The SAT prep course in place, it helps students to better prepare themselves for the rigorous test and get the score that they desire.”
NHS offers both SAT English and Math prep courses after school on Mondays and Tuesdays for free. They’re taught by NHS faculty Nicole Cowles and Conor Gereg.
“Students have felt more confident in their abilities while taking the SAT and have even said they have been able to improve their scores,” said Nicole Cowles, a math teacher at NHS. Cowles also advises the math help for the free SAT prep course.
These courses also boost students’ SAT scores which helps Nonnewaug rank higher overall against other high schools in Connecticut. Additionally, students who have high scores in the reading and math sections have increased chances of being accepted into colleges they would like to attend, and are proven to be more competitive applicants.
“SAT scores compliment a students application and can show their abilities in math and reading comprehension to colleges,” says Kathy Green the CCRC Coordinator. “Some colleges do require scores while others don’t, which can make you a strong applicant and can make you stand out and increase your chances of being accepted.”
