WOODBURY ー Homecoming for the Northwest United football team was nothing short of thrilling for the Workhorses, who earned a 39-14 win over Thames River on Sept. 19.
“The game was electric and overall exciting,” said junior quarterback Brady Herman, who threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores. “I was able to sneak my way into the end zone with the help of my teammates, doing what you call a tush push.”
Brayden Whipple, another junior at Nonnewaug, was ready for the game and came out of it with a win that helped the Workhorses improve to 2-0.
“The game was amazing,” said Whipple. “The team was locked in the entire time, the crowd was locked in the entire time, just a great atmosphere all game long.”
R.J. Barksdale scored two touchdowns, one on a 55-yard fumble return and another on a 29-yard pass from Herman. Derek Chung and Davion Joe also scored.
Herman thinks that the rest of the year will go well if the team locks in and pulls through.
“The rest of the season has to come down to how we are going to execute in the big moments when it’s needed the most, like what happened during Stratford,” said Herman. “Locking in during practice will be the key to the rest of the year.”
Whipple has his goals for the rest of the year and hopes to come out of the season with success.
“The rest of the season will come down to our focus as a team,” said Whipple. “As long as we stay focused on one game at a time and keep playing our hardest, we will continue our success throughout the rest of the season.”
Northwest United will next visit Lewis Mills on Sept. 27.
