WOODBURY — The Nonnewaug Cross Country Invitational is the oldest cross country meet in Connecticut. This year was its 65th anniversary and took place at Nonnewaug on Oct. 4 with 19 different high schools.
“The invitationals are where they are more competitive,” said Arleigh Duff, coach of the girls cross country team. “They teach kids how to race in really competitive atmospheres.”
This invitational, Duff was happy with how the girls did as they ended up finishing third out of all the teams.
“I’m really proud of my team today. They did really well,” Duff said. “I’m also proud of the fact this is the longest invitational in Connecticut.”
These invitationals mean a lot to the people who attended.
“You can see the pride in everybody and everyone loved it,” said Duff.
Junior captain Grace Rubacha had a great time and thought everything went well.
“Overall everything ran smoothly,” Rubacha adds. “I think everyone had a really good time.”
For Rubacha, having this home meet where she and the team can rep Nonnewaug meant a lot to them.
“Having a home meet where you can represent your team in front of a bunch of other teams and prove to everyone how much spirit Nonnewaug has and how much fun we can have at the meet [is great],” Rubacha added.
