WOODBURY — Groups of buzzing bees, resilient rappers, “super senior” superheroes, and Hawaiian hicks, came to play Sept. 27 at Nonnewaug High School’s annual Senior Field Day.
Senior Field Day has been a tradition for upperclassmen for as long as some can remember. In fact, before 2014, the event had a reputation of being chaotic. But 10 years ago, class advisors John Dominello and Conor Gereg flipped things back around to make it a fun team-building event for seniors to celebrate their last year in high school.
This year, the senior class of 2025 left the athletic fields with memorable memories made.
Senior Class Council members Ava Parks, Lily Kiernan, Emma Jackson and Chelsea Davis grouped together with class advisors Jamie Lisevick and Katy Aseltine to plan out the day.
“[It took] a lot of planning,” Kiernan said, “a couple months of lots of phone calls, tracking people down, getting teachers.”
The planning took all the way until an hour before the event.
“[We had to] make a to-do list of things to grab [Friday] morning to set up,” Parks added.
In order for the day to work in their favor, preparation had to be done in order for a fun day for everyone.
“We had to get all of the stuff; on Wednesday we went all around the school, picked everything up and then brought them all down [Friday] morning on the golf cart,” Davis said.
“We had to get here really early,” Jackson said.
Zach Cordova and Ray Lomax, both on the rapper-inspired team called “Nonnewaug with Attitude,” loved the idea of Senior Field Day and think the whole purpose of the day is meaningful to seniors.
“The teams [are] dynamic, when you have a bunch of people, the competitiveness — it’s pretty fun,” Cordova said.
“Just being together as seniors, you’ve been here for four years, so it’s fun to play games together, compete, it’s very competitive,” Lomax added.
Rock Roulette ended up taking the W despite many deeming the team called “Ya Like Jazz,” which dressed as matching bumble bees, as the pre-event favorite.
Lisevick said she loves what Senior Field Day gives to upperclassmen.
“I think it’s a really exciting day to start off your year,” Lisevick said. “You guys have worked so hard and just being able to celebrate the accomplishments you have already made and kick off the year with something fun and exciting, you guys have earned it.”
