WOODBURY — Nonnewaug isn’t new to out-of-country trips, like the French department trip to Canada for the past two years.
Despite this, the newest foreign trip isn’t a bus ride away, but rather a flight away.
Nonnewaug’s planned trip to Spain from April 10-19, 2025 is getting nearer. Twenty-four students and faculty members will be embarking on a journey through all parts of Spain.
Spanish teacher Karen Sandor is organizing the trip.
“As a teacher for 22 years, I took trips with students … [and] those are probably the most memorable moments for me as well as my students to experience,” says Sandor. “I wanted to give the opportunity to our students at Nonnewaug. I still remember the first time I took my students … [and] they were so appreciative.”
This year’s itinerary is to travel through all of the country, including the cities of Seville and Granada. Students will stay for nine days and 10 nights.
“[We will] fly into Barcelona and spend a couple of days there, then we travel by bus to Madrid, stopping in another big city, and then we go to Toledo and have an excursion to the old Spanish capital,” Sandor said. “Then we take the high speed train (named the AVE) to Seville, and from there we go to Costa Del Sol (the southern coast of Spain). We will visit the Alhambra, which is by far my favorite place to go in Spain, and then some kids will have the opportunity to cross the Strait of Gibraltar and go to the Spanish territory of northern Africa.”
The excitement isn’t apparent with just the chaperones, but the students as well.
Samantha Sorcher, a junior at Nonnewaug who is currently enrolled in the UConn ECE Spanish course, has expressed her enthusiasm.
“I’m excited for the food or the sights, and to see all the different aspects, and I really want to try the jamón there and tapas,” Sorcher exclaims.
Sandor says that she has more destinations on her roster for the coming years, hoping to visit Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and Mexico.
