WOODBURY — Following years of progress, and now completion, Nonnewaug’s building project has finally drawn to a conclusion and the greater Woodbury community will have its chance to tour campus Nov. 2.
“The open house gives the community an opportunity to see how their tax dollars have benefited the students who attend Nonnewaug High School,” says Region 14 superintendent Brian Murphy. “NHS is a state-of-the-art learning facility that helps our students prepare for post-secondary and career opportunities.”
NHS’ building renovation took place over a variety of stages all meant to create a modern learning environment that equips students with skills to meet the 21st century head-on.
“The finished version of the renovation will provide the NHS community and all of its students with the most up to date facilities and learning opportunities,” says Nonnewaug principal Mykal Kuslis. “The renovation as well as the horse barn/sugar shack/equipment building firmly cements Region 14’s commitment to its students and families, and to their continued growth and learning. The finished product will not only be the best and most updated school in Northwest Connecticut, but one of the best in the state.”
Construction initially began in February 2018 and kicked off a renovation that involved over 145,000 square feet of campus, modernizing everything from math and science lab spaces, to a state-of-the-art performance stage in the auditorium, and an overhauled fitness facilities.
“I’m excited for the community to see the entire campus including the new classrooms, cafeteria, culinary program, athletic fields, horse barn and sugar shack,” Murphy said.
The $63.8 million dollar project hasn’t just transformed Nonnewaug’s learning spaces, but it’s also made NHS a state of the art destination for students.
“The facilities have definitely improved the building and the renovation did a lot for the school’s community, and I’d say it definitely helps draw out-of-region kids in,” says junior ag student Ella Schiron. “My favorite part of the new building is definitely the library. I love how spacious and cozy it is.”
For Kuslis, the chance to show off a completed renovation is an exciting opportunity.
“This will be the first time we formally invite the public to see the school since the renovation was complete,” says Kuslis. “I’m very excited to share this with the community who are such strong supporters of Nonnewaug High School and our fine tradition.”
