WOODBURY — All Nonnewaug High School students turned in their old Chromebooks last month in exchange for a a new one.
What was controversial about this swap? Where are the old Chromebooks going? Why did students need to make the swap?
What are your feelings on trading your old Chromebook in?
Katie Farrell, Nonnewaug senior: “It’s really sad. I remember putting all of my Ice Breakers stickers on my computer sophomore year in Mrs. Holtman’s class. It’s weird, I have a sentimental value to these Chromebooks. I’ve had these stickers on my Chromebook for three years; I don’t want to take them off.”
Would it be beneficial for you or other students to keep their old Chromebooks after high school?
Nonnewaug senior Julia Longoria: “I think it would be beneficial for the seniors to keep their old Chromebooks in college if the old Chromebooks aren’t going anywhere specific. I also think it would be nice for the kids that don’t have the money or resources to buy Chromebooks while in college. This way students can get their work done in college.”
How do you feel about the new Chromebooks?
Longoria: “I personally don’t love them. They are extremely bulky now that they are putting cases on them. Not to mention they are literally the same Chromebooks that we were using before, so there aren’t any noticeable upgrades.”
Where are the Chromebooks going?
Nonnewaug library media specialist Deb Flaherty: “They are leasing out the Chromebooks.” Some will stay here and be used as loaners for the school, and the rest are going back to Dell, where they will be refurbished.”
What happens when the Chromebooks come back to you with sticker residue or any other damage?
Flaherty: “I’m sort of the middle man. I sometimes end up cleaning the Chromebooks when I get handed a Chromebook with some damage. The Chromebooks shouldn’t really have stickers on them which is why we got cases for the Chromebooks this year because the Chromebook company and Dell consider those to be damaged.”
What is the difference between the old and new Chromebooks?
Flaherty: “They are similar in terms of model. However, the newer Chromebooks will be able to handle the software updates that the old Chromebooks aren’t able to do. This will help when we do NWEA testing and or taking any tests we have in the future.”
