WOODBURY ー With PSATs over and students past the sometimes dreaded day, Nonnewaug seniors are able to look back on what they did on this day. One day a year, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen students are required to take the PSAT. This gives them the chance to see the format and feel for the test before taking the SAT. But what about senior students? Where are they?
Current seniors previously took the SAT last spring; this year, they have the opportunity to use this day to their advantage. They can use it for college searching, college prep, job shadowing and so much more. Kathy Green, the College and Career Resource Center counselor, feels that this is a very important day for seniors to use this opportunity.
“Seniors should take advantage of this day by doing a job shadow, a volunteer experience, visiting a college campus or working on their college applications,” says Green. “I will be in the CCRC to support any students who choose to come in to work on their common app or post-secondary plan. It’s essentially a day allowing for self-guided exposure and experience or action.”
There are several options for seniors to find a useful way to spend this day. Prepping for college can be stressful and can take a while, and this extra day allows seniors to have a time designed for getting help with anything they may need help with.
With Green in the CCRC, it is also helpful to the seniors as it allows them to be able to get help firsthand and be able to ask any questions.
Seniors are given this day to have chances to deal with post-graduate planning. For many seniors, this looked different for each of them. For one senior, touring a college campus was her plan for Wednesday.
“As an alternative to taking the PSAT on Wednesday I will be visiting St. Joseph College,” senior Haley Sarandrea said. “It’s one of the colleges that I’m looking to apply to. It is close enough to home that I will be able to go for just a day trip to learn about the school and see the campus.”
She feels that this day will be the perfect opportunity to be able to look at the college without taking time away from anything else.
For another senior, taking this day to explore and go out in the field is what she spent her day doing.
“I am planning on shadowing a cat spay at Embrace Animal Hospital,” senior Gwen Scozzafava said.
Job shadowing is another way that students will be able to spend their day. It gives the opportunity to a senior to get a feel of what they could be doing in the future.
Senior Liam Sandor used this day to tidy up some loose ends and get all things college submitted.
“I’m hoping to finish up anything that I might need in order to get my applications in for colleges,” Sandor said.
With many deadlines approaching seniors find themselves always busy and having something to do regarding colleges and beyond high school. This was just one of the days that they had the opportunity to be able to set aside time to get some of these tasks done.
