WOODBURY — Anyone who walked into a Nonnewaug Student Council meeting during the past month would see hustling students preparing for Nonnewaug’s Trick or Treat Street.
The annual event that has been taking place for many years brings kids from the nearby towns for trick-or-treating inside the school. This year’s edition took place Oct. 26.
Student Council and other clubs at Nonnewaug have helped make Trick or Treat Street the best experience for the kids. Lots of hard work was needed to pull the event together, and students in Student Council have been preparing for the event since September.
Student Council advisor and science teacher Joshua Kornblut helped guide members to creating a successful event.
“[They prepared by] getting candy collected and figuring out who can come help set up beforehand,” says Kornblut.
Members of Student Council were a big help to Kornblut, not only helping him, but the students also had lot of fun with decorating.
Teachers from the Ellis Clark Regional Agriscience Program gave ag students FFA credit if they brought a bag of candy.
“It was an easy way to get an ag credit and it was a good help for the school and Trick or Treat Street,” says freshman ag student Gianna DeLorenzo.
Staff and students at Nonnewaug worked together to make this event a memorable for little kids, but they benefited the local food banks. Families who visited the event donated at least one nonperishable food item per child to enter.
Student Council arrived at Nonnewaug at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning to start setting up for the event, and many students came and helped set up the scenery.
“All students are bringing in some candy to donate and we’re all just really working together,” says Kornblut.
The students used decorations from the former Event Planning Committee and Student Council to decorate the school around the other clubs’ stations.
The turnout of the event was impactful for the community, leaving smiles on kids’ faces and goods for the food banks.
