WOODBURY — Every year, Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices service members have made for us. Nonnewaug High School continued its tradition of welcoming veterans from all branches of the military to be honored during a school-wide ceremony Nov. 7.
Organized by the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society members, students read the history of the day and speakers shared their stories. The NHS orchestra and choir provided music for the event.
Senior Lily Kiernan spoke at the ceremony regarding the history and importance of reserving this day.
“It’s important because most American students don’t really realize the true history of Veterans Day and its significance,” she said.
The holiday coincides with the 11th day of the 11th month, marking the end of World War I in 1918 – when a truce was declared between the Allied Nations and Germany.
Today, there are more than 1.3 million people serving active-duty in our military.
Kiernan explained that taking the time to appreciate service members is significant.
“The sacrifices of veterans are often taken for granted,” she said, “and the rights and freedoms we enjoy today are also taken for granted.”
Rho Kappa students read the 1915 war poem “In Flanders Fields,” which paints the vivid picture of the poppies that bloomed amid the graves of fallen soldiers. Students handed red poppy flowers to all attending veterans, a longstanding symbol of support to armed forces members.
“Speaking at Veterans Day helps to bring us all back to a state of gratitude and give thanks to those who fought for our amazing nation,” said Kiernan.
