WOODBURY — United Ag and Turf, a John Deere dealer, on Sept. 26 dropped off a brand new 5075e John Deere tractor and a John Deere Gator in exchange for the school’s Case model tractor and Ford model tractor.
Andrew Zielinski, an agriscience teacher, explained that even though this may not seem like a fair trade, giving two tractors for one, the two tractors had mechanical issues.
“The Case had a fuel issue and ongoing brake issues which made it economically feasible to trade it in. It had some major repairs done before I started here which was alarming given that it did not have a lot of hours on it,” said Zielinski. “The Ford was mechanically still in good shape, but we didn’t use it often enough to justify keeping it. ”
A lot of students have also had problems with these two tractors during operation. The most prominent complaint on the Ford was its electronic clutch pedal. The majority of tractors have a mechanical clutch pedal, which works and feels different than an electronic one.
“The Ford tractor with an electric clutch was hard to deal with when trying to shift on the fly because it would not engage sometimes,” senior Levi Johnson said.
Due to the fuel issue on the Case, it also had its fair share of complaints from students, including Johnson.
“Sometimes the Case would bog down and shoot out white and blue smoke and sound horrible,” Johnson said.
