WOODBURY ー The Nonnewaug senior and junior girls took the field in a spirited powderpuff flag football game Nov. 25. Friends turned rivals as the teams battled it out. This annual tradition brought the crowd to life, blending competition with school spirit in a game to remember.
The seniors, who lost last year’s game, ended their careers with a 26-23 win over the juniors, a group that many expected to win the game.
“I most pleasantly surprised to see the performance of the seniors,” said Nonnewaug assistant principal Declan Curtin. “Before the game people were taking some jabs about the senior class, and they certainly showed up and proved that they were a formidable opponent. Not only that, [but] they were very well coached and executed the game plan and they were just the better team of the day. It’s great to see kids come together and have fun. Honestly, [it was] some of the best time in the entire year. I told [principal Dr. Mykal] Kuslis afterwards that’s two of the best hours that we have spent down there because sometimes that’s what we need in life.”
Ellie McDonald, a senior who was the main part of the team’s offense, had a lot of fun during the game and came out with a win.
“The game was so fun. We were underestimated but still came out with the dub,” said McDonald. “Overall, it was a great experience and I got to have a good time with my senior and junior friends. Also, our coaches this year were so good and really cared about winning, which motivated us to win.”
Sophia Garguilo, a junior who scored multiple touchdowns, explains how even with a loss, players still had fun.
“We all tried our best and did have some good touchdowns and plays,” said Garguilo. “The game didn’t go as we expected, but it was fun and hopefully we will do better next year.”
