WOODBURY — Down the hallway leading up to the Nonnewaug gymnasium, there are many gold-plated plaques with championships and awards from previous years, dating all the way back to the 1970s. Over the past eight years, Nonnewaug field hockey has grown into a successful team that it is today.
The Chiefs finished 9-7-2-1 in 2024, a record that was twice as strong as last year.
“Going into this season, we knew we had a chance to be in a lot of the games,” says head coach Janet Crocker. “Some of the girls really put in a lot of work over the offseason. We also had a good crop of freshmen coming in, which I think made all the difference.”
New to the team this year was assistant coach Jill Roden, who played at Nonnewaug and led her team to two Berkshire League championships in 2016 and 2018.
“Our senior year, we were coming off of a not-amazing season the year prior, but we definitely weren’t the bottom of the BLs,” says Roden. “My senior year, we had a really strong forward line and defense and we were able to pull off winning the BL.”
