WOODBURY — Nonnewaug High School is always looking for ways to help the community, and what better way to do that than helping enrich the minds of the people?
NHS’s Book Club decided that they wanted to share their love of books with the community for a fair price of nothing by installing and filling their free Book Barn with books for all ages for anyone to take. It’s located at the top of the stairway that leads to the athletic fields.
“The Book Barn is the equivalent of a free little library,” said Dawn Maletzke, the club advisor and NHS library media center staff member. “We keep it stocked with books that are from children through adult books. We make sure every week that it is stocked and that nothing is happening to it.”
The Book Club isn’t just about the students reading books; it’s building a group of people that want to share their love of books and give everyone the opportunity to enjoy.
“I think it’s a good thing that we are participating in the free book library as a club,” Book Club member Mary McGlynn said. “It gives everyone an opportunity to pick up a good book, and it’s getting a lot of use so far.”
So far, the club sees positive effects from the Book Barn and hopes to continue to get the word out that this is an opportunity that everyone should take.
“It’s an offer for people who are maybe waiting for a ride or parents waiting for kids after sports or clubs a chance to pick up a new book,” Maletzke said. “We are seeing a good outcome of the Book Barn. We already noticed that we had to fill it several times and hope to have to keep filling it.”
