WOODBURY — For some Nonnewaug students, the most difficult question they face each day isn’t biology. Instead, it’s a topic that’s even more challenging: chocolate chip, M&Ms, and how many cookies are too many?
This year, cookies seem to be the buzz in the cafeteria. Maryn Savarese, a sophomore at Nonnewaug, doesn’t know why she has an obsession with the school cookies.
“Honestly they are just really good,” Savarese said. “I don’t even know why I like them so much. Every day I waste my money on them.”
What’s changed? Everything, including the recipe. Pam Wendt, the lunch aide who bakes and sells the cookies every day, shares the cookies’ secrets.
“They come in frozen balls and I put them on trays to bake them,” Wendt said. “A lot of people don’t know they are actually made with whole grain. The recipe changed years ago.”
Count junior Jonathan Cheung among the cookies’ fans.
“I really like the cookies,” Cheung said. “I just keep buying them because they are so good.”
Junior Nic Sniffin agrees that the cookies are so good.
“They are one of the best cookies I’ve ever had,” Sniffin said.
Cookies cost 75 cents each. Wendt is shocked about the cookies’ popularity.
“Oh gosh, honestly I sell about 120 cookies a day,” Wendt said. “Most kids buy three or four, six or seven, even 10 cookies at one time. I guess they really are just that good.”
