WOODBURY 一 Nonnewaug hosted its annual red-out rivalry night vs. the Shepaug Spartans on Feb. 7. The built-up, nerve-wracking fun that Nonnewaug looks forward to all year finally took place. The game brought excitement as well support for the team making it a great night.
Robert Metcalfe, a junior on the team, was happy with the outcome of the support NHS brought to the game to make it just that much better, even though his team lost, 82-74.
“I really liked the red-out game. It was on a senior night, too, and it was a really good environment with all the fans, a lot of people supporting our annual red-out game and LLS Foundation fundraiser,” said Metcalfe. “We’ve had a really good season so far. There’s been a lot of injuries and a lot of people have stepped up helping them get better for next year. There is very good competition between us and Shepaug and a lot of other BL teams and we’ve learned a lot from all those teams this year for next year, and especially next year’s red-out game.”
The Nonnewaug crowd is one of the most important parts of the red-out, representing Nonnewaug’s school spirit. Business teacher Adam Lengyel, who ran the scoreboard for the night, appreciated the support brought to the games, which included a 33-31 overtime win for the Chiefs girls.
“I thought the crowd was very supportive the entire time. There was a great attendance of students that showed up and a lot of parents and friends and family as well,” said Lengyel. “I thought it was a great atmosphere, good night, the only thing that of it that would have been better is if all four teams won.”
The red-out supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Eva Ripperger, a senior, knows the importance of the cause and is in favor of everything NHS does in support.
“LLS is one of the best foundations to support and I think that the red-out game is one of the best ways that NHS comes together in our community and fundraises for such an important cause,” said Ripperger. “I think that pairing such a fun event that everybody wants to get involved with and a charity that everybody wants to get involved in really comes together and just helps fundraise the most amount of money and we all just come together as a community and do a really good job of promoting the charity and how to help.”
