WOODBURYー The Shepaug Spartans blew away the competition Jan. 29 defeating Newtown/New Fairfield, 4-1, with three goals scored by Gunnar Ough and one by Matthew Molleur.
Miles Wilson, the senior captain, was happy the Spartans pulled through with a win, stepping up each of the players confidence just a little.
“Last night’s game was a good win for the team. We have been struggling to get on the win column for the last couple of games,” said Wilson. “It was a good step forward for the rest of the season.”
Matthew Molleur, a junior at Nonnewaug, was happy with the turnout but knows there’s always room to improve.
“I scored a goal and had an assist on one of Gunner’s goals on the power play,” said Molleur. “I had a ton of playing time. I scored the first goal and we played solid as a team. We are working to improve.”
The winning plays were not just brought up in the moment, though. The team’s strategic planning and practicing brought together the win, says Peyton Thomas, assistant captain.
“Before last night’s game, the team studied and reviewed positioning in all three zones,” said Thomas. “We were able to set some goals to work for in last night’s game and we did just that. [We] worked hard all three periods. Winning every shift and keeping our feet moving was the key to success and what got us the win. As a captain, I’m very proud of how the team has been working as a unit and family.”
