WOODBURY – Prom is one of the biggest events at the end of the school year with many kids preparing months beforehand, and the biggest thing that changes yearly is trends in prom dresses.
How do we figure out these new trends that are always evolving? In my instance, I always would look at the Nonnnewaug prom dress account on Instagram.
Checking out the Instagram account was one of the best ways to see what type of trend everyone seemed to be on. It also helped to make sure I wouldn’t match with anyone.
But that was last year; this year the trend is obviously a little different. This year, there seems to be specific styles and fabrics that really pop out to me.
Senior Eva Ripperger’s dress is a strapless fitted dress with a lace corset bodice. The skirt is ruched with ruffles and has a high slit, with the whole dress being in a nice champagne color made by Sherri Hill. It is a beautifully stunning dress.
Ripperger shares her reasoning as to why she picked out her dress for this year.
“Everybody usually goes for really bright colors, and they are gorgeous,” said Ripperger, “but I thought that going for something more subtle would be more elegant, which is typically what I lean towards, and so the color of the fabric and the shine with the way the light hits it, it just really accentuates everything.”
Another dress that I really love is Gwen Scozzafava’s dress. Her dress is a tulle sequin A-line gown with sheer corset bodice, off-the-shoulder straps and a ruffle high slit skirt with the color being black from Sherri Hill.
Scozzafava shares how this dress was the right one for her.
“When I was picking out my dress, I was keeping in mind that this was my senior prom,” said Scozzafava. “I wanted a bigger dress than last year – more skirt, more glitter, nice color – so when I found my dress, it was just perfect for me. Normally black dresses are kind of basic, but the way it was made with the slit, the glitter, the ruffles and the top, it elevated it.”
Other dresses that have really caught my attention are dresses with cutouts on the bodice that form a type of diamond shape, this also seems to be paired with a sheen/shiny fabric. It’s not my favorite out of the trends but it is a nice one.
Then there’s always the usual basics of satin sleek and straight dresses, with a decorative corset top, corset backs too, usually in bold colors, always a sweet and simple way to go that keeps with the glamour and elegance that prom is all about.
This year for prom, I have gotten my dress. It’s a red sleeveless mermaid dress with stone accents and a lace-up back.
This year’s trends and last years have definitely changed, but this change is always good because it helps keep every year fresh.
