WOODBURY — The Nonnewaug boys tennis team defeated Northwestern on April 25 in a series of closely contested matches, but in the end, the Chiefs pulled through with no losses in the five matches.
Coach Nick Sheikh knew that Nonnewaug could finish off the match with a clean sweep.
“I expected [Northwestern] to be a little bit stronger this year,” said Sheikh, “but I was happy with how our players performed. It was nice to get the 5-0 sweep when I thought things might be a little bit more competitive.”
Matt Shupenis, a senior on the team, was happy with the outcome, saying he and his teammates played well.
“Liam Tracy had a great match where it was a competitive first set and then he won the second set pretty easily,” said Shupenis. “Our top guys really played well and were able to cheer us on, cheer on the doubles teams, and it was great overall team win.”
Cash Medonis, a sophomore, won his doubles match with Shupenis.
“I think all our matches it was good,” said Medonis. “Me and Shup played together [and] won pretty easily.”
