WOODBURY — The Nonnewaug baseball team completed their first few scrimmages, showing progress across different areas of play. As the team prepares for the regular season, Nonnewaug players and coaches are focused on building from these early performances to prepare for the upcoming games.
Nonnewaug’s first two games were postponed by rain. The Chiefs’ regular-season opener will be April 9 against Gilbert.
Kyle Brennan, assistant coach for the team, was satisfied with the outcome of the scrimmage. He knows his team can pull through as needed.
“We are very pleased with our first two scrimmages. The best hitters performed well,” said Brennan. “The guys who are going to have to pitch for us have proven they’re on the right track. Our defense is coming along. Woodland and Holy Cross are both going to be very good teams, and to play well against them right out of the gate was an encouraging sign.”
RJ Barksdale, senior captain for the team, knows the team showed confidence and consistency in their approach, which carried over into their regular-season outlook.
“It went well, and we did well,” said Barksdale. “We hit the ball, fielded pretty good, didn’t take a lot of errors which caused us to win, and the team’s looking pretty good. Hopefully we can keep up what we have been doing and keep going and keep the pride going towards the rest of the regular season.”
Along with Barksdale, Jackson Demers, a sophomore pitcher, reflected on the team’s performance, noting key areas of improvement and consistency.
“We played really well as a team. We all came together in the moment. We needed it, that’s why we played really well in that game,” said Demers. “We hit the ball well. We fielded well. All of our pitchers pitched well. We just had it all together and had a good game.”
