WOODBURY — Spring break is a time when Nonnewaug students can take a breath of fresh air after the January-to-April stretch of nonstop work.
Many students look forward to this week-long break to go on vacation, work, have college visits, or stay at school to play sports. Spring break can be a nice period away from school and have a bunch of free time to do the things teenagers like to do.
“I am going to Puerto Rico for spring break,” junior Jules Morriar said. “The pros are it’s a break from school and the stress from that. The disadvantage is it is too short. It is hard going back to school after a break.”
Along with students, teachers will also enjoy their time off from work.
“I think it’s a good point of the year where teachers need a rest, and especially for students and staff to enjoy the sun,” says Kelly Nichols, a Nonnewaug English teacher. “It’s glorious to have a break, especially because the weather is nice and it’s enjoyable to go outside.”
Some students also have some mixed emotions about spring break — especially if they have schoolwork to do over break.
“You get to hang out with friends and work on school work if you’re behind,” junior Autumn Buonauto said. “It’s a nice break right before finals to get ready for that. The disadvantages are teachers giving work over spring break, and it sucks because people go on vacation and you just forget work you did before you left.”
On the other hand, some students only view spring break in a positive light.
“Definitely all pros for me,” junior Marcella Vetro said. “I look forward to this break and how I can enjoy time for vacation.”
Visiting family is also a common spring break opportunity.
“I’m going to Sarasota, Florida to visit my grandma,” junior Katelyn Burrier said. “I’m going to Busch Gardens and SeaWorld. I’m also doing the 5k and food festival at SeaWorld.”
Ag students have many responsibilities during break, and students get to participate in activities involving the chapter.
“We’re all going to the Florida trip with the ag program at school,” junior Addison Neilson said.
Students also have a role of showing up to their school sport despite being on break.
“I feel like it is nice to go to spring sport because it is nice to condition, and if you don’t practice, you can lose some of that,” said Taylor Timko, a freshman track athlete. “[Spring break] doesn’t hold me back; it gives me time for flexibility to do things. The cons are having something you planned and a sport overlap.”
