STORRS – The Woodbury FFA sent students to compete at the 95th Connecticut State FFA Convention on May 16-17. Participating teams for Friday competitions were Quiz Bowl, Food Science, Dairy Evaluation, Ag Sales, and Veterinary Science.
At the end of the day, Woodbury had three first-place teams: Quiz Bowl, Dairy Evaluation, and Ag Sales. Members of those teams will represent Connecticut this fall at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.
Freshman Hannah Sanzone, who is part of the winning Quiz Bowl team, is nervous but also confident about going to nationals.
“I feel really good about winning,” said Sanzone. “Me and my team studied a lot for it, but I am a little nervous about nationals. We do have all the study material, so I think we will do OK.”
Following Saturday, the participating teams were Creed Speaking, Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Prepared Public Speaking, Ag Education, Parliamentary Procedure, and Conduct of Chapter Meetings.
There were also other activities that were happening, like the career show, where people showed off the careers they chose to pursue, and a silent auction.
And on the final day of competition, Woodbury had two winners: Ag Education and Conduct of Chapter Meetings.
Junior Mia Layseca, who won for Ag Education, expressed how the victory was a big surprise to her.
“It came by a surprise,” said Layseca. “I really wasn’t expecting to win because I was very unprepared for the contest, but I made do with what I had and put on my best performance and ended up winning. I am very excited to go to nationals again.”
