Have you ever had something taken from you that you used every day?
From in class assignments to homework, the use of ChatGPT was a daily exercise for most Nonnewaug students.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, administration has blocked the use of ChatGPT on Chromebooks schoolwide. With ChatGPT previously being so available, it was possible for students to get better grades without doing the work.
But how will Nonnewaug students react when their ability to use it goes away?
Many students face challenges with the new blockage of ChatGPT. For example, simple things as well as large assignments could be impacted in multiple ways.
“I use it for general ideas and it helps me brainstorm,” says Nonnewaug junior, Gianna Desjardins. “I feel like without it, I’ll struggle a little bit.”
ChatGPT can take a single prompt and generate numerous ideas from it. It is simple and effective when it comes to little things like this.
Similar to Desjardins, freshman Charlotte Toon agrees that ChatGPT did help students. “It will take me a lot longer to complete assignments, and it will be harder to understand them.”
Occasionally, when a teacher is out, students will use ChatGPT to further explain the lesson or something they don’t understand. Without it, many students are worried they won’t fully understand some content they are learning in class.
Though many students see it as a negative change, some understand the reasoning behind the new rule. “I’d say [this change] is positive,” says junior Luke Lodice. “More people will do their work in their own words now.”
ChatGPT helps with ideas, but some students let it do all the work for them. Now, students will get the grades they deserve and learn even more.
“I think it’s good so students won’t cheat,” Luke Lodice adds.
