The Nonnewaug girls varsity soccer lit up the field during Tuesday’s September 30th Blackout game against Lakeview. Nonnewaug fought for their 2-0 win in their first game under the lights.
Assistant Coach Rebecca Pope stated, “I think that anytime students show up to support our team, the kids get really hyped. I think they want to play particularly well in front of their peers.”
Having other students support the team is really important and it helps get the team ready and motivates them to play their best. The team worked together to create more chances for the team to score.
Pope said, “We passed the ball really well. Overall we played well and even though we won 2-0 we had lots of lost opportunities to score more.”
The team created opportunities to score more than Lakeview did. They worked well together to pass the ball and created openings to score and gain more goals. People in the crowd have their own opinions about the game too.
Taylor Carella, a freshman at Nonnewaug said, “The black out was pretty chill. There weren’t as many people as I was expecting, but there was a pretty big student section.”
The student section was not as big as people were expecting, but they were ready to cheer on NHS varsity soccer.

Carella said, “The team was communicating well.”
The players on the field were communicating and so were the coaches.
Pope said, “I think Mr. Brutting did a phenomenal job. I think he’s a great coach, and I think he’s consistent no matter the situation.” Having a coach that is consistent no matter the game helps keep the players motivated and helps them to communicate on the fields.
Pope stated, “He’s always bringing his A game no matter how we play.” He doesn’t change his coaching based on how the crowd or the time of day the game is and that consistency keeps the players consistent with how they play.
Popes said, “There’s always something to learn and improve on.”
