WOODBURY — As October rolls around, the leaves turn orange, but the Nonnewaug student section goes pink for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Going in with an undefeated record, the Nonnewaug Chiefs football team was challenged by Notre Dame Prep on Oct. 24, the annual Pink Out game.
With hope and excitement the NHS student section was filled with pink outfits and smiles, ready to witness yet another win on the books.
Jonathan Cheung, a senior player for the team, gave some insight on how he thought the game would go.
“They are a tough team,” Cheung said. “I think it’s going to come down to a couple key plays, but we are going to do our best to work together and hopefully have a really great game. It’s a bigger game because it’s the second home game and I think there will be lots of people there so that will be intimidating.”
The Chiefs scored with 17 seconds remaining to cap off a comeback win 35-32. Brady Herman hit Robert Metcalfe with the 30-yard game-winning pass to complete the touchdown.
So far, the Chief’s season has been a success, with smooth sailing. Derek Chung, a senior starter for the team, explains how this game was their first standout competition.
“It was a very exciting win because it was close at half but then we came out after half and didn’t play great,” said Chung, “We had 3 straight turnovers and faced the most adversity we had all season. But we came back and a few things went our way and we came out on top. That’s why this win was so great because it was the first time we had a big challenge all year.”
Brady Herman, senior quarterback for the team, was ecstatic about the thrilling game he and his team had played.
“The game was crazy, we started the game in the first half very solid, the offense was efficient and moved the ball nicely,” said Herman. “Starting the second half I was not playing my greatest football to say the least but in the end my teammates and coaches had my back all the way till the last game winning drive to bring home the win.:
The annual pink out not only brought awareness to breast cancer but gave the students an excuse to dress up head to toe in a color we all know and love.
Chung personally loved the school spirit and knows all the team needed to pull through at the end was the endless school spirit the NHS student section brings to the table.
“I liked the pink out and there were the most people at that game we had all year,” said Chung. “This helped us win the game because the crowd was very loud and everyone was wearing pink showing great school spirit.”
Herman, like Chung, was happy with the turnout of the support.
“I think it starts with the amount of people there and the student section definitely did their part in that aspect,” said Herman. “Pink out, home game on a friday night is a game plenty of people attend and this year it did not disappoint.”
