WOODBURY – With snow in the mid-February forecast, the possibility of school closures are always likely. With that being said, when will the seniors at Nonnewaug graduate? The answer to that has still yet to come into clarity.
For seniors at Nonnewaug, there’s a heavy focus on when they can walk the stage and move onward in their endeavors beyond high school.
“Its another week of work, and I feel like students tend to slack off towards the end of the year,” NHS Senior Cassie Bomba said. “So pushing it back another week can cause more problems for not only students but also teachers.”

Graduation is an event students look forward to for 13 years. Once senior year begins, most want it to come as soon as possible. However, with the amount of snow Connecticut has been receiving this winter, the anticipated graduation date could be pushed back.
“I would say, right now, the 13th is what we’re aiming for,” Declan Curtin NHS Vice Principal said. “However, if we were to have two or three more snow days, I think the Board of Education would look at that and most likely decide on a switch.”
News like this brings uncertainty for the NHS class of 2026.
“I feel like we should have a set date, because it’s something I’ve always looked forward to,” Bomba said. “Having a set in stone date is more promising.”
Seniors aren’t the only ones in a state of confusion and curiosity about when graduation is to be held.
“I’m starting to hear from parents that they want to know when it is and we don’t really know when yet because we don’t know how many snow days we’re going to have,” NHS Principal Mykal Kuslis said. “So, generally what happens is, once it’s set I do send a message out to parents that night at the board meeting letting them know when graduation is going to be.”
Not all families live close, some travel hours by car or even plane to see a loved one graduate. Without a concrete graduation date, it makes it slightly harder for those who need to book airfare.
“I think that it can be communicated very early,” NHS teacher Adam Lengyel said. Lengyel isn’t just a faculty member within the district, but he’s also a parent who had family visit for his son Tom’s graduation last June. “They should pick a date and stick with it at the beginning of the year.”
Though the date will remain unknown until the April board of ed meeting, students, parents and teachers will eagerly await a concrete date for when NHS will celebrate this year’s seniors.
