WOODBURY – As the weather starts to warm up, many students at NHS are excited for the upcoming spring activities, but for those who still don’t have their licenses this season can feel long and isolating.
During the winter months, most students spend their time inside doing schoolwork, sports or just relaxing. The moment spring arrives social activities start to pick up. Friends begin making plans, they start driving to different places and spend time together after school. For the freshmen and sophomores without a license, it can be a struggle to be part of those plans.
NHS freshman Addie Cetrone sees the struggle that many 9th grade students face when they don’t have a driver’s licence.
‘’Sometimes my friends can just decide to go somewhere after school, “Cetrone said. ‘’Since I can’t drive yet, I have to rely on my parents or someone else to bring me there.’’
Fellow freshman Armanie Sylvester agrees with Centrone.
“’In the spring/ summertime I just want to hang out with my friends, but my parents are always like it’s too late, or too early, and it’s not even that late,’’ Sylvester says.
Transportation became a big challenge for the underclassmen. There are many places students want to go to, such as parks or sporting events that are not within walking distance. Without a license, students may feel left out when their friends who can drive and make plans.
This can also affect social connections. Students with licenses often have more independence and flexibility to meet up with friends, while younger students need to plan days ahead or not be able to go at all sometimes.
Some students say this is the most noticeable during the warm seasons.
Freshman Maddy Taylor agrees.
“When the weather becomes warm, it just feels like I’m stuck,’’ Taylor said. “I always have to plan ahead, but sometimes I’m able to walk locally around town.’’
