WOODBURY – After the last few months of shorter days, freezing temperatures, and blizzard warnings, the warm weather days are already beginning to lift everyone’s moods.
“Once we get the sunshine back, after the time change, I feel like a new person,” NHS English teacher Kelly Nichols said.
There is a reason as to why everyone’s moods are changing with the weather. For students and staff, the nicer weather is associated with being out of school which brings everyone a sense of relaxation and something to look forward to.
“People are in better moods because there is more sun, weather is getting warmer, you spend more time outside, and because of that, naturally people are getting more vitamin D,” said NHS science teacher Joshua Kornblut. “During the winter I feel like a lot of people are deficient in that, and that alone can help with our moods.”
In science, spring is known for growing and new beginnings. There is a chemical reaction from the sun that naturally produces more serotonin, which would naturally make us happier when being in the sun.
“I think that in the winter I am normally a lot more tired but when it is spring time I have more energy,” said NHS sophomore Rowan Boisseau. “I want to be outside doing more things.”
Many students say they feel more motivated and active during these last few months of the school year. There is significantly more participation in class, sports, and activities like senior assassin, or prom. The longer days also give students more time to be productive after school, which improves their mood and overall wellness.
Teachers are taking advantage of the warm weather. Whether it is taking the class out on breaks to walk around the school campus, or agriculture and wellness classes spending their class outside.
“Overall Spring has made me more positive and also more productive,” NHS freshman Megan Hartery says.
As it continues to get hotter, the impact of spring also continues.
Spring is proven to bring people motivation, positivity, and relaxation. For many at Nonnewaug, this is exactly what they need to end the school year off on a good note.
“When it is really cold it makes you more tired but when it is close to summer it is easier to get out of bed and easier to go outside,” Boisseau said.
