WOODBURY — First it was the Hydro Flask; now it’s the Stanley tumbler. It seems like everyone has one.

For many years, people and brands continue to try to keep up with the new, cool trends. People become interested and influenced by others and buy certain things because they are popular.

Elena Costantini, a freshman at Nonnewaug, feels that she was peer pressured into buying a Stanley tumbler.

“I needed something big to drink more water in, and I saw it on TikTok,” Costantini said. “Since I’m very influenced by trends, it didn’t take much to want the water bottle.”

Anna Crocker, a sophomore at Nonnewaug, agreed with Costantini.

“I think that TikTok influences me the most, especially with the Stanley cup,” Crocker says. “I wasn’t going to cave in and buy a $50 water bottle, but once my friend got one, I wanted to get one too because I thought they were popular and cool. I don’t think I have drank as much water as I do now.”

According to Danya Issawi of the New York Times, the product’s sales increased by 275% in 2021 compared with 2020.

Trends could also have a negative impact to students.

“Some trends could be unsafe and dangerous,” said Constantini.

Vandalizing bathrooms and other places, known as the “devious licks” challenge, impacted many people in just the span of a couple of months in 2021, proving that certain trends and things that people follow could lead to others getting hurt and following others in their footsteps.
