WOODBURY — Many gathered around the football field Nov. 25 to witness the annual powderpuff game. Each year, a team of senior girls and junior girls fight against each other in a game of flag football.
After last year’s loss to the seniors, this year’s current seniors came ready to win, and they did. After a close game, the seniors won with a score of 26-23.
Katie Farrell, a returning player from the past year, was excited for a comeback.
“I was happy that we got to get some revenge for last year,” Farrell said.
After multiple hours of practice in preparation for the game, Farrell was happy with how well the team played this year.
“Our team really improved from last year and played really well,” Farrell explained.
Abegail Diezel, the quarterback on the senior team, explains how all of the practices really helped to prepare the team.
“Not only did we win but we were way more prepared and the overall vibe of the team was amazing,” Diezel stated.
Junior Merije Iljazi was sad that they lost but still felt it was worth it to play due to all the fun she had.
“The juniors definitely underestimated the seniors, but everyone had a great time regardless of the outcome,” Iljazi explains. “We were really proud of ourselves.”
Just like this year’s seniors, the juniors are prepared to make a comeback next year.
“I’ll definitely participate next year. It was so fun,” Iljazi states. “We will definitely make sure to win next year.”
Both seniors and juniors shared in the fun of celebrating their touchdowns.
“Running the plays was super fun and celebrating with my teammates and coaches made it even better,” Farrell said.
“Celebrating with the girls was the best part,” Diezel agreed.
Overall, the 2024 powderpuff game was a success, with both teams going home accomplished.
“I had an amazing time, not only with my role on the team but just being after school and having fun with all the girls on the team,” Diezel stated.
