WOODBURY — 19-0.
The Nonnewaug softball team is having one of the best seasons they’ve ever had.
Although last year didn’t go how the girls hoped, they’re making up for it this year by winning their first 19 games, including a perfect 14-0 record to win the Berkshire League championship.
Jordan Kovach, a sophomore who also started as a freshman, thinks that there was a lot of pressure last season but it’s now easing as a sophomore.
“Last year especially was really tough being in the starting lineup and also leading off as a freshman,” said Kovach, who was hitting .526 with 42 runs scored through 19 games. “It was very stressful but once you get the hang of it it’s fine, this year it’s kinda better just to ease into it as a sophomore, knowing what I did last year and trying to build on it.”
Scarlett Ivey, a sophomore pitcher who leads the team with 1.52 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 87 ⅔ innings, agrees with Kovach that this year is a lot better than last year.
“Last year as a freshman it was a lot of pressure, but now that we have more experienced players, it doesn’t make it as bad,” said Ivey, who’s also hitting .552 with 36 RBI and 46 runs.
Even if pressure is off others, the incoming freshmen, like Gianna DeLorenzo, are on the opposite side of the stick.
“I think there is definitely pressure being an underclassmen and being a starter because I feel like I have to provide for the team,” said DeLorenzo, who leads the team with a .611 average, 11 home runs, and 62 RBI.
Junior captain Elizabeth Boisits, who’s hitting .508 with four homers and 25 RBI, feels that because of the team getting better, there are positive aspects for years to come.
“I think we’ll be even better next year then we are this year based on who we know is coming up from eighth grade and everything, but I think the team will be even better than this year, which will be hard to beat,” Boisits said.
Kovach thinks no matter what grade a player is in, “Show leadership, be a role model.”
The Chiefs will be one of the top seeds in the Class M state tournament when it begins June 2.
