WOODBURY – After a difficult journey, this team is on the path to victory. Seniors Ella Brown, Anna Crocker, Sophia Garguilo and Laila Jones are helping drive their team to success. These special core four seniors who participate in NHS field hockey are determined to give everything they have with the Connecticut State Tournament on the horizon, and this group has grown throughout their four seasons in the program.
“I’ve seen only growth with this team from losing to winning,” says NHS Field Hockey Captain Laila Jones, one of NHS field hockey’s four captains. “Not only has the record changed, but the team spirit that has come with it.”
Looking at their high school careers so far, it’s evident: steady improvement each year as they mature as players. As freshman, the group achieved a 3-11 record; as sophomores, the group saw a subtle jump in success to earn a 2-9-3 record. Last year, as juniors, the group saw its biggest jump yet: an 8-8-2 record and a state tournament berth. Enter this season, and the team sits with a 8- 2 record which has earned them a second place finish in the Berkshire League.
Although no sports team is ever perfect, this team strives for perfection.
Sophia Gargulio, senior field hockey player at Nonnewaug High School, has firsthand experience with the lofty goals NHS field hockey sets.
“Over the years, it’s become more of a tight-knit group where we all get along and support each other,” says captain Sophia Garguilo.
Growing closer as a family has affected the way they play on the field; not only did their record improve, but their friendship did as well.
“Playing in the offseason would be instrumental for growth and team bonding,” says head Field Hockey coach Janet Crocker.
For the four senior captains, they plan on enjoying what’s left of the season, and know that next year’s group will be in good hands.
“I hope the best for the team and I hope the incoming players have an open mind and follow the footsteps when it becomes their last year,” says Laila Jones.
While the team will miss the loss of valuable players, new players soar towards the opportunity to be a leader and a captain on the team.
Coach Crocker has seen many new players start to fill in the gap left by these seniors already.
“There are some younger players making great progress,” says Crocker. “I am excited about how they will fit into their new roles.”
