WOODBURY – It’s 6:45 in the morning and I’m sitting in my car in the perfect spot to watch everything unfold in Nonnewaug’s truck lot.
On the way into school I take back roads knowing that I am almost an hour early. I’m not in a crazy rush, but other people decide they need to get there even earlier. If someone was going under the speed limit I can understand losing patience but I am going at a decent speed to still be traveling safely. I don’t know why people think getting closer to me is going to make me want to go faster. If anything it’s going to make me go slower.
The reason I get to school so early is to avoid the traffic of other students and buses, but I also get the pleasure to see everyone else get to school, see when they arrive, and how they will behave in the parking lot. Seeing how everyone acts is very humorous and entertaining even at 7:00 in the morning.
Sitting in the car, I see people coming in zipping faster than gossip in a small town, parking crazy, and acting obnoxious. You also get to see where everyone thinks they can park.
When you are sitting there you hear other peoples radios more than your own weather they are blasting rap with a loud base or some slow sad country music.
“Oh, girl,” Ashlynn Graziano said, “people just blast music when they pull in in the morning, like OK, we know, we get it, it’s early in the morning and you’re in your feels. Not everybody wants to get your Olivia Rodrigo like right in the morning.”
People’s parking is another thing to watch. You have some people back in and others will pull in. Many people will struggle to park, especially with the pressure of others pulling in.
“Bro is blasting his music sometimes,” said Graziano. “Then he pulls in and he is so crooked and so forward, that he’s over the line. I know this kid doesn’t even care.”
One thing that doesn’t help anyone park is the beeping – people will beep at their friends, which compels the whole parking lot to start beeping. For unexpecting new drivers, this can make parking impossible but give those who get there before a good laugh.
“When I pull in,” said junior Boe Stokes, “it’s like a whole musical of horns going off all at once.”
The trouble is not only in the truck parking lot. Plenty of tomfoolery begins to unfold in the main student parking lot up front.
“I try to go to school around 7:10-15 so I’m not late,” said junior Ada Gorka. “Usually, I see some crazy things when I’m there. People cut the corner really quickly when entering the main car lot and almost hit my car and the ones next to it. But something really funny is when people always back up into their spots, which is fine, but they don’t signal or anything so they get really close to hitting cars. Just watching the whole thing is entertaining.”
As much as I complain about the loud noise and commotion that goes on outside of the building I would not want anything to change. The constant action me and many other students stay amused in the morning while dreading going into the building.
This is the opinion of Elsie Crocco, a junior reporter for the Chief Advocate.
