WOODBURY — Under the lights on Nonnewaug home turf, Sept. 3, Nonnewaug and Watertown girls field hockey faced off. With both teams working hard, Nonnewaug fought for a 4-0 win in their first season game.
Assistant Coach Jill Roden shares what led to this success.
“We really worked as a team,” Roden said. “We’ve had some issues of that in the past, of individuality. It’s a team sport, and we were passing really well and communicating. So teamwork contributed heavily to this victory.”
With Nonnewaug pulling ahead by four goals, varsity senior Ella Brown reflects on what it was like to score two of them.
“It felt really good,” Brown said, “because you’re helping the team have a great start of the season. And Watertown is a really good team in the Berkshire League for us.”
After a win in a preseason jamboree against Watertown, Nonnewaug sophomore field hockey player Brooke Stokes thinks there was a good vibe going into the game.
“I think, honestly, our perseverance and our attention to detail helped so much,” Stokes said. “Coach is really good about telling us what we need to work on, and we do it in practice. Our whole personality towards the game today was hype, we were all so pumped up, and we met before and we were just ready.”
Starting the season with a shut out 4-0 win puts Nonnewaug girls field hockey on a good track according to Nonnewaug junior player Tatum Kociszewski.
“I think that we gained a lot of confidence during this game,” Kociszewski said, “and I just think that we’re going to have a good season in the BLs.“
