WOODBURY – It’s wasp season and Nonnewaug High School lunch is like their very own buffet. They are not just outside at lunch, though. Hoping to find nectar and other sweets, the wasps go down to the sports fields. Even though it’s only the beginning of the year, two people have already been stung.
“I was literally getting a pair of socks out of my field hockey bag, and I felt something, and there was a bee on my arm,” Jadyn Heron, a junior at Nonnewaug said.
Heron got stung when she was down by the sports fields, getting ready for field hockey. She didn’t even notice any wasps around her, until it was too late.

It is a common mistake to confuse wasps with bees, they may look alike but that is where the similarities stop. Wasps are more aggressive and are more likely to sting while bees avoid it.
No matter whether it’s from a bee or wasp, getting stung is uncomfortable and itchy which can be distracting in class and sports.
“It definitely distracted me from practice and affected me for a couple days,” Heron said, “because I did have to leave practice early because of it.”
Students who are allergic or simply afraid are forced to sit inside. Freshman Sadie Nichols said, “I used to eat outside every single day but then the bees got too bad.”
This season is the only time of year that the weather allows students to eat outside. Which is a nice break from being indoors all day.
“It’s nice being outside and it gives me a break because it’s all day in school,” said Nichols. “We have to sit inside, so not being able to sit outside is kind of annoying.”
