WOODBURY – Every year, children from the community look forward to trick or treating at Nonnewaug High School. Each club had their own theme and games for children trick or treating to win candy and prizes.
Even though the event just passed, it took time and effort to get everything prepared for the special day.
Nonnewaug Highschool science teacher, and student council leader, Joshua Kornblut organizes all of the set up for trick or treat street each year.
“I am in charge of the entire trick or treat street set up,” Kornblut said. “I put together a doc with a whole map of the building, figuring out how we are using each room in the building.”
For the past two Halloweens, Kornblut has worked behind the scenes preparing everything in advance, before the busy part starts.
“I sent out emails to staff to see what part they want to play, see the theme, as well as what area of the building they want to be placed in,” Kornblut said.
It’s not just Kornblut that plays a huge role in preparing Trick or Treat Street.
“My officers (Ada Gorka, Riley Gallicchio and Emily Thomas) also help out a lot by preparing all of this as well,” Kornblut added.

Senior student council leader, Emily Thomas works with Ada Gorka as well as all the other members of student council to set up and get ready for the event and collect food for the community food bank. This year’s donations totaled over a dozen crates of nonperishables. The event, in totality, is a major undertaking for Kornblut and his team.
“Ever since we finished planning the white out pep rally, we’ve been planning trick or treat since it takes so much time,” Thomas said. “We put all the decorations around the school and help the booths.”
Ada Gorka adds to Thomas about what they do behind the scenes.
“We try to see what clubs want to actually do the actual event and then mostly focus on our club and student council as a whole, and what we want to do as a theme,” Gorka said.
“We all decide who’s going to go early since the school opens at 8,” Thomas says. “We start with the student council booth and then we go around the school, putting tables out and then after the clubs come in and do their own thing.”
Even though Trick or Treat street takes place at Nonnewaug High school, many other vendors come together to set up their station.
“This year we are trying to get more community involvement, trying to get the fire department as well as the police department,” Kornblut said. “I also collect food donations for the food bank which helps the community out.”
